Bryher Fire Station
This roof and scaffold was complete as part of a larger commercial project for our valued the Clients the Isles of Scilly Council. It was a memorable project given it was on the Only fire station located of the Off island of Bryher home to just 60 permanent residence.
Being so remote all materials, waste and travel had to be arranged to be transported via freight to the tidal quay. The roofing element of the project took a turn when the strip discovered a badly cut roof with dry rot and wood worm. Given the roof was stripped we were able to re cut all the rafters and re insulate the roof space before getting it covered over with felt in just 2 days.
The roof was also found to be an ACM {Asbestos Containing Material} resultantly all the roof was stripped in accordance with HSE standards, double bagged and transported home for safe disposal. The final twist to this was the removal, reinstatement and commissioning of 7 x large photovoltaic panels.
In terms of spec this roof received a 200 x 400 Westland Brazilian Grey Green slate, hooked and nailed with a dry ridge, new lead work, and ventilation systems. It also incoperated a re roof to the fire station porch, WC and office roofs.
The project was complete ahead of time and to the required budget.
Pier House
This project saw the scaffold re roof of a grade 2 listed building that was severely damaged by storm Goretti back in January 2026.
Being a listed building we helped the client navigate her way through the nuances that can make these projects difficult. We enlisted and helped manage Building control, highways permits, scaffolding applications and freight.
After being able to negotiate with listed building consent to transfer from a expensive Delabole slate we proceeded with installing a Spanish Lanhydrok 200 x 400 slate hooked and nailed. Verges were complete with a traditional wet lay on cloaking board and a lead scallop detail to finish.
We were additionally able to secure the safe removal of the two previous granite chimneys which were redundant and in doing so remove any future liabilities they could likely cause.
We complete this project in just 2 week on budget and to a high standard as can be seen.
Bank House
The scaffold & roofing works on this property were completed for our valued client the Duchy of Cornwall, the largest private land owners in England.
The roof was a scantle wet laid roof which received damage from storm Goretti. Being a listed building this project was complete in a 250 x 500 Riverstone slate with a wet laid verge, wet laid ridge and lead scallop detailing up the verge walls.
given its exposed nature next to the harbour wall we took the liberty of sealing up all the slates to abutments and verges with Adhesives and made sure to both hook and nail all slates throughout the body of the roof.
the project was complete to budget and in 8 days as quoted.
The Atlantic
This roof was complete on behalf of our clients at St Austell Brewery and was for the main pub/hotel in town on St Marys, Isles of Scilly.
the previous roof was a very old scantle wet lay roof which had served its purpose and following on from damages after storm Goretti was in dire need of replacment.
On removal of the old slate we made sure to dispose of it to the local IOS quarry where it has later since been repurposed into hardcore. All waste was separated and recycled as per our environmental impact policy
Once stripped the roof received a new 250 x 500 Mont Azul Spanish slate. all dormers were complete with mitred hips and a lead mop handled ridge. All the Velux windows were replaced and internal drylining and deformational damages to the hotel rooms made good.
This project was complete it just under 2 weeks and to the exact budget that was quoted.
Potters Farm Workshop
The scaffold & roofing works on this property were completed for a local farmer as a part of a new build development for the construction of an entirely new workshop for the commercial farm.
We Constructed the slab drains and all the double skim insulated block work to BC and national trade standards before commencing with the roofing works.
We installed new pre built trusses onto our internal wall plate. Our trusses were constructed by local supplier Pasquals along with the design plan and load bearing calculations. once installed we proceeded to construct a gabble ladder both side for aesthetic feel then proceeded to felt and batten the 20m long building.
We installed a 250 x 500 Brazilian grey green Westland slate with stainless hooks and a Marley concrete dry ridge complete with block end ridges. All in all this entire project took us 6 weeks with the roofing works taking 16 days. We complete this project to the exact budget quoted and faster than the timescales given.
Rose Cottage
This Roof and Scaffold was complete as a larger domestic project on behalf of a client in Illogan, Redruth.
It followed the format of removing the pre existing asbestos bungalow slated roof, including its rafters. Then extending up the external walls on the front elevation in a timber frame & single skim block structure by 1 story. Finally re installing a new custom built cut roof with slate.
A key issue on this project was managing the structural integrity if the roof structure as a whole as the client wished to retain the existing ridge height and opposite side of roof due to have a large volume of PV panels installed.
We later realised that the new pitch would bring us under the recommended pitch for slate roofs of 20 degrees. Fortunately this wasn't our first rodeo. We used a product called easy slate allowing us to reduce the pitch of the roof to the 15degrees required to achieve our levels.
despite the challenges we complete this in just under 4 weeks for exactly the quoted price.
10 The Strand
This property, located along the seafront of Hugh Town, St.Marys, Isles of Scilly offered some technical challenges in the way of challenging weather and difficult roofing and scaffolding.
The owner requested a re roof and after being granted the necessary planning for change in materials they opted for a 200 x 400 Westland Brazilian grey green slate hooked.
When we arrived we were greeted with a nearly 200 year old wet lay scantle slate roof, access on the highways and the largest storm of the centaury mid project {Goretti}.
The roof was stripped back to rafters and all timber treated, de nailed and cleaned before receiving new felt and batten and slate. we reinstated the neighbours side in scantle wet lay with a made on site lead bonded gutter with a mop handle finish.
All in all this project took 13 working days and was complete to budget with a leak free roof guaranteed to last a long time.
Polreath Tea Room
This project saw the re roof and scaffold of a grade 2 listed building that was damaged by storm Goretti back in January 2026.
Following on from the asbestos trip we installed an Actis Breathable insulating felt. this is a relatively modern product that adds U-Value to your home particually designed for houses where beefing up loft insulation isn't an option due to dormer conversions.
In addition to this we went on to install a 200 x 400 Spanish Zamora slate. This property had a wet laid verge onto cloaking board and a lead scallop detail finishing to the granite stone work.
All in all this project took 21 days to complete and was complete well under budget whilst also completing multiple additional works outside of our schedule of works such as redecorating the chimneys. upgraded leadwork to the dormer hips and ridge and renewal of the timber sash window covering to the front of the property
Hallaze Court House
This roof was undertaken for a commercial property owner as a part of a larger new build project that we took on in 2023. It saw the full erection and completion of a 3 bedroom new build house near St.Austell.
The roof was a 250mm x 500mm Westland Brazilian grey green nailed for aesthetic appeal with gable ladders and UPVC Anthracite grey facia and soffit boards. the ridge was a red clay Marley with block end ridges and verge boards were finished with a Finial. Additional to these work we installed and commissioned 5 large photovoltaic panels. to do this we recessed them into the roof using solar trays then adjoined the slates to the trays using code 4 lead.
We fit and installed the trusses from new having them made off site by our local supplier Pasquals. This style of truss is called a raised tie which is the blend between a standard tie roof yo expect to see in most new builds and a more premium raised cut roof. This offered the perfect blend between affordability and aestheics for the client as well as retaining a small loft space.
The whole process received strict scrutiny by building warranty providers, Building Control and the client. Despite all this we completed this phase of works 2 days ahead of schedule and exactly on budget.
Rosevean House
This project saw the re roof and scaffold of a 3 story flat complex on the Isles of Scilly. The dwellings had Redlad Renow concrete tiles with a Bitumen felt and untreated battens which were starting to show signs of water ingress. The properties dormers also suffer from marginal water ingress being comprised of a recently slated artificial slate covering on top of the pre-existing bitumen felt and batten.
This job offered two technical challenges. fist was the scaffold erection onto 3 different pitched roofs to the rear of the building and the second forming a bonded gutter between two dissimilar roofing tiles to the rear.
We overcame the scaffolding challenges by incorporating the best of tubular and system scaffolding methods and great scaffold safety access techniques. As for the bonged gutters we used a combination of pre fabricated grp bonded guttering and tied it in with code 4 lead soakers to the neighbours slate side. We replaced the dormers with a 200 x 400 Brazilian graphite slate hooked and nailed with new code 4 lead soakers flashings and valleys.
As for the rest of the roof we stripped the tiles carefully, then cleaned them off and after installing new felt and batten we reinstalled the pre existing tile. We completed this project in budget and on time.
Little Crow
This roof was complete as a part of a larger domestic conversion project. The roof comprised of artificial slate hooked and tingled. We erected the scaffolding, removed the entire roof covering including its bitumen felt and batten, and re felted and battened in just one day. On the proceeding two days we renewed all the facias and soffits as well as slate and ridge the entire roof with 2x slate vents.
On this project we installed a 250 x 500 Brazilian grey green slate hooked with nailed abutments and verges. The verges were left as before with a smooth painted render finish to the underside. This roof was complete just before storm Gorreti and we can safely say that despite being sat on a hill on a remote island far south in the atlantic ocean not a single slate was damaged or slipped. This is a true testament to the power of slate hooks and the WFays team.
This roof was complete in just 3 days, and if that couldn't get any better it was also purchased and installed by WhitsonFays LTD as a kind gesture to the large amount of work our client had given us that winter.
Gunner Rock
This project was completed as a part of a larger contract to renovate a 3 story 250sqm house on the Isles of Scilly. we discovered that there was large viable signs of water ingress between the external wall of the house and the old cast concrete balcony. After brainstorming ideas we came up with the approach of a GRP solution.
The concrete was keyed up and cleaned before applying multiple layers of fiberglass and epoxy to achieve a 100% waterproof barrier for the basement flat below. In addition to this the Underside of the balcony received a structural make over consisting of renewing the old asbestos cement fibre board and replacing with new cement fibre as well as framing for new gallows bracket supports for the balcony. Finally we installed a grade 316 polished stainless steel balcony railing as well as new facia, guttering and soffit boards.
All in all this balcony renewal took an accumulation of around 8 days.
We aim to keep our website as up to date as possible. Please note references for the above works can be provided upon request as can many more examples of our roofing and scaffolding services
